Burying The Sausage
the night before and hope the weather behaves
Yup, you read that right.
We are talking about Burying The Sausage
And no, it’s not a dare, a prank gone wrong, or something the best man invented on the stag do.
If you’ve never heard of it, you’re probably raising an eyebrow right now, possibly both euebrows.
But believe it or not, burying a sausage the night before a wedding is a Scottish wedding tradition… and it’s been having a moment in 2025
It’s one of those customs that sounds completely bonkers until you hear the reason behind it, then suddenly you’re nodding along thinking, “Does that actually work?”
This quirky little ritual seems to have properly taken off this year, and I’ve already seen the results at a couple of my 2025 weddings. Let’s just say… the weather gods may have been smiling.
So before you start picturing mourners in black and a solemn sausage farewell, let’s take a wee look at what this tradition is all about, and why so many couples are quietly popping a banger into the ground the night before they say “I do”.
Lets sing along…. Bring me sunshine
Burying the sausage for Better Weather
I come across new wedding trends every year.
Some are sweet, some are strange… and then along comes the sausage burial, and suddenly nothing surprises me anymore.
Couples can now be spotted tiptoeing into the garden the night before their wedding, gently tucking a sausage into the soil like it’s some meaty time capsule.
The goals simple
It’s supposed to bring sunshine to your wedding day.
That’s right, according to this curious custom, if you bury a sausage the night before the wedding, the weather gods are more likely to smile on your big day.
Who knew a humble sausage could wield such power?
And just in case you’re wondering…
Yes, if you forget to bury it, well, let’s say you might want to pack an extra umbrella.
How to bury the sausage
Now, as with all good wedding traditions, there isn’t just one way to bury a sausage.
Oh no.
There are options. Opinions. And possibly debates.
Some couples go raw.
They place their trust entirely in nature and pop the sausage straight into the ground, uncooked.
Whether raw versus cooked affects the weather outcome is still up for debate.
Others prefer to go cooked.
This usually involves a hearty full Scottish breakfast first, with one brave sausage being saved for the greater good.
Now, I’ll be honest, this method would require giving up a perfectly good sausage, which is no small sacrifice.
Especially if you’re someone who really loves a good sausage.
Either way, the intention is the same: a small act of hope, a dash of tradition, and a buried banger doing its very best to bring sunshine to your big day.
Location, Location, Location
If you’re planning to take part in this noble tradition, here’s a little bit of advice
Pick your sausage with pride. This is not the time for a sad leftover. Choose wisely.
Select a spot your dog cannot locate. Trust me, dogs have zero respect for tradition.
Ask permission. If you’re at a venue the night before, please make sure the venue is happy for you to dig a hole on their grounds.
Does it work?
Does the sausage bring sunshine? Sometimes.
Does it bring a brilliant story? Always.
Weddings are about love and vows, but they’re also about laughter, shared moments, and the little traditions that make the day yours.
And if a hidden sausage the night before gives everyone a giggle and a great story to tell, then lets do that.
So, are you gonna give it a go?
Or will you keep your sausages where they belong and simply trust the Scottish weather to behave itself for once?
Either way, I’ll be crossing my fingers for blue skies for you all
